Cougars Complete Perfect Start

FRESNO, Calif. – The NAIA's No. 7-ranked Azusa Pacific won 2 more matches Saturday afternoon to close out the 18th Annual Sunbird Invitational with 4 victories in the 2-day tourney, winning all 4 in 3-game sweeps.
 
Early Saturday afternoon the Cougars downed No. 20-ranked Concordia University of Seward, Neb., 32-30, 30-19, 30-19, and then in the evening dumped Notre Dame University de Namur of Belmont, Calif., 30-22, 31-29 and 30-24.
 
Against Concordia, All-American Jenna Sagehorn (Chino Hills, Calif./Whittier Christian HS) tallied a match-high 11 kills to go along with 11 digs and 5 blocks.  Fellow sophomore Christy Kimmel (Costa Mesa, Calif./Calvary Chapel HS) added 9 kills and a team-best 12 digs.  Junior Mahea Burgess (Honolulu, Hawaii/University HS) finished with 38 assists and 9 digs.
 
In the second match, Sagehorn again led the Cougars with 13 kills and 18 digs.  Junior T.J. Gause (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Calvary Chapel HS) added 10 kills to go along with a match-high 22 digs. Burgess duplicated her first-match effort with 38 assists and then doubled up on the digs with 18.
 
Burgess and Gause were named to the all-tournament team for their play.
 
Though the Cougars won all 4 matches in the tourney, they nonetheless finished second to tourney-host and No. 12-ranked Fresno Pacific, which was also 4-0. As a conference, the GSAC faired quite well, posting a combined 11-1 record against the rest of the field, which includes Concordia-Irvine's 3-1 tabulation.
