Cougars Collect Third Straight 20-Win Season

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- For the first time in program history Azusa Pacific has strung together a trio 20-win campaigns. The NAIA's No. 18-ranked Cougars notched win No. 20 of this season with a 66-55 GSAC victory at Cal Baptist tonight.

Junior center Stephanie Patten broke out of a month-long slump with a season-high 24 points, including 15 in the second-half when she converted 7-of-10 shots.

Behind Dawn Cason's 10 points, Cal Baptist jumped out to 17-12 lead midway through the first half. However, Azusa Pacific responded with an 18-2 run to take a 30-19 lead with 4:11 remaining and was still 38-29 at halftime after shooting a fine 55% (16-for-29) in the opening 20 minutes.

Cal Baptist pulled to within 3 in the early minutes of the second half at 40-37. Again the Cougars responded, this time with a 10-0 run behind 7 consecutive points from All-American Jacqueline Godoy to put the lead back to 13 at 50-37 with 13:36 to play. From there the Cougars ran away for their fifth straight win and their 16th in the past 17 games.

Junior guard Catherine Solorio added 16 points while Godoy tallied 13 points and a game-high 5 assists. Allison Box was the only other Cougar in double-digits, tossing in 10 points on a 3-for-5 effort from the floor. Freshman center Paige Bateman, playing 18 minutes in place of injured All-GSAC center Jennifer Barbone, recorded 9 points on 4-for-6 shooting while collecting 4 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 20-6 overall and 16-1 in the GSAC. The Cougars, who have already clinched the GSAC title, become the first GSAC team ever to win 16 conference games.

Cal Baptist falls to 13-17 overall, 6-11 in the GSAC.
