Cougars Clinch the GSAC

AZUSA, Calif. -- For the second time in the past 3 years, the NAIA's No. 20-ranked Azusa Pacific is the GSAC regular-season champion, clinching at least a share of the title Tuesday night with an 81-72 victory over Fresno Pacific.

The Sunbirds went on a 9-1 run to tie the game at 70-70 with 2:48 remaining in the game, but Stephanie Patten hit a baseline jumper with 2:22 to play, then grabbed the defensive rebound of Fresno Pacificâs attempt to tie the game. The Cougars finished the game with an 11-2 run.

Jacqueline Godoy scored 14 of her team-high 19 points in the second half, hitting 3 free throws and grabbing 3 of her 4 rebounds in the final 2:22.

Godoy's spinning lay-up at the buzzer off a cross-court pass from Catherine Solorio gave Azusa Pacific a 40-39 halftime lead and capped an opening 20 minutes in which the 2 teams traded the lead 10 times and tied it another 6 times. Jennifer Barbone tallied 13 first half points on 5-for-8 shooting.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 14-1 in GSAC and 18-6 overall, while Fresno Pacific drops to 10-5 in GSAC, 19-9 overall.
