POMONA, Calif. -- After celebrating its 2001 NCAA Division II national championship with a pre-game banner raising ceremony, Cal Poly Pomona stormed out to an 18-6 lead then hung on for a 99-93 win over Azusa Pacific Saturday night in Pomona.
The Broncos, who are the NCAA Division II No. 1-ranked team, jumped out to the early lead, before the Cougars closed to within 2 at 26-24. However, Cal Poly re-upped the lead to 8 (58-50) at halftime.
A 10-5 Cal Poly run to start the second half opened up a 13-point lead (68-55), which would later balloon to 23 points. The Cougars never got closer than 9 points until the final minute of the game when a flurry of turnovers closed the gap to the final margin.
Senior 2-time All-American
Jacqueline Godoy led all players with 35 points. She hit 10-of-20 shots and 14-of-15 free throws. She also had a game-high 8 assists and 5 steals. All-GSAC seniors
Stephanie Patten and
Catherine Solorio added 16 and 15 respectively.
Cal Poly is the second top 5 opponent in 3 games the Azusa Pacific has faced this season. The Cougars fell to the NAIA's No. 2-ranked Southern Nazarene (Okla.) in the season opener Nov. 2.
The Cougars, now 1-2, open up GSAC play Tuesday night in San Diego against Point Loma Nazarene at 5:30 p.m.
