AZUSA, CALIF. -- Azusa Pacific used a 17-4 run at the start of the second half to blow open a relatively close game and cruised on in for an 85-56 GSAC victory over Point Loma Nazarene.
All-American
Allison Box led the Cougars by snapping out of a prolonged slump with 17 points on the strength of 5 3-pointers.Ê
Jennifer Barbone added 13 points while
Catherine Solorio chipped in with 12.
"We've been waiting awhile for Allison to find the button," said Jorgenson. "Tonight, she found it. She had a rhythm much like she had last year."
All-American
Jacqueline Godoy put together another well-rounded game with 8 points, 9 rebounds and a career-high 13 assists. Godoy led the second-half breakout with 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a lay-up during in the first 5 minutes of the half.
"We talked at halftime about Jacqueline being more aggressive, because she can break down anyone off the dribble," added Jorgenson. "She can do so much and the numbers showed it
tonight."
There were 8 lead changes and a trio of ties in the first half. However, when freshman
Paige Bateman entered the game, the Cougar fortune turned around. With the Cougars down 24-23
with 7:22 left in the half, Bateman spurred a 14-2 run, scoring 6 points while picking up a steal and a block. The Cougars settled for a 39-31 halftime lead. By the game's end, Bateman had tallied 10 points, 3 rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
The Cougar offense clicked all night. Playing only its second game in the new Felix Event Center, Azusa Pacific shot a sizzling 55% (37-for-67) from the floor and 30 of the Cougars' 37 baskets came off assists.
"We emphasized patience tonight and really wanted to work everyone into the offense," added Jorgenson.
Point Loma's Erin Keller, last year's GSAC Player of the Year was saddled with foul trouble all night. She picked up her third foul with 6 minutes left in the first half. As a result she finished with 14 points, 6 of which came in the final 10 minutes when the game was out of hand.
Azusa Pacific has now won 3 straight and improves to 7-5 overall and 3-0 in the GSAC.Ê Point Loma falls to 4-8 overall, 1-2 in the GSAC.
