SAN DIEGO, CALIF. -- Azusa Pacific, ranked No. 11 in the NAIA, nearly pulled off one of volleyball's most impressive and unusual feats -- rallying from 2 down to win in 5 on the road. However, the Cougars simply expended too much gas in the comeback and fell at No. 6-ranked Point Loma Nazarene, 15-6, 15-13, 14-16, 10-15, 15-11.
After staving off elimination with an emotional third-game victory, the Cougars looked sharp in game 4 to even the match at 2 games a piece. However, Point Loma regrouped and took 5-1 and 9-4 leads in game 5. The Cougars pulled to within 2 at 11-9, but the Crusaders edged away for the game and match victory.
Point Loma has now won 9 straight and improves to 16-3 overall and in the process strengthens its grip on first place in the GSAC with a 7-0 mark. Azusa Pacific has dropped 3 straight and falls to 14-4 overall, 4-3 in the GSAC.
