AZUSA, CALIF. -- Super subs Allison Box and Jennifer Barbone combined for 38 points to lead the NAIA's No. 22-ranked Azusa Pacific to a 75-50 GSAC victory over Point Loma Nazarene, Saturday night.
Box and Barbone put together an inside-out game that was nearly unstoppable. Much of Box's game-high 21 points came from 5 3-pointers, while Barbone tallied all 17 of her points inside the paint.
"We valued each possession tonight," said Azusa Pacific coach Danielle Jorgenson. "We took care of the ball and did a better job of getting the ball to the players we wanted to have the ball. Playing Box and Barbone together obviously gives us a lot of choices."
At one point in the second half, Barbone scored 8 straight points and 11 of 13 Cougar points that resulted in a 54-35 Cougar lead with 12:54 to play in the game.
Center Erin Kellar was the only Crusader in double figures, tallying 14 points, 8 points under her season average. Kellar was hindered by 3 first half fouls which forced her to sit out nearly half of the first half of play.
Azusa Pacific used a 15-5 run midway through the first-half to take control of the game at 29-16 with 3:16 left to play. Box scored 10 first half points, including 5 during the Cougar run. Point Loma missed 24 of 33 shots in the first half, allowing the Cougars to build up the double-digit cushion.
ãWe had a pretty good inside-outside game tonight,ä said Box. ãOverall, it was an outstanding team effort.ä
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 18-5 overall, 9-3 in the GSAC. Additionally, the Cougars avenge one of their 3 conference losses. The Crusaders handed Azusa Pacific a 66-64 setback in San Diego on Jan. 8. Point Loma falls to 11-14 overall and 7-5 in the GSAC.
