Box Leads Cougars Over .500

AZUSA, CALIF. -- Sophomore Allison Box hit the first 6 3-pointers she attempted, finishing with a game-high 22 points to lead the NAIA's No. 19-ranked Azusa Pacific to a 91-47 victory over Occidental Tuesday night in Azusa. The win improves the Cougars to 4-3 overall, and gives Azusa Pacific a winning record for the first time since a season-opening win over The Master's.
 
Catherine Solorio scored 6 of the gameâs first 8 points, leading Azusa Pacific to an early 8-0 lead before the Tigers could light up the scoreboard. The Cougars continued the run, jumping out to a 20-2 lead thanks to 9 points from Solorio, 8 from Jacqueline Godoy and Box's first 3-pointer of the evening. Godoy scored all 13 of her points on perfect 4-for-4 shooting from the floor, including 1 3-pointer, as well as a perfect 4-for-4 mark at the free throw line.
 
After taking a 53-25 lead into the locker room at halftime, the Cougars went on a 13-2 run to start the second half, sparked by 3 treys from Box, giving the Cougars a 68-27 lead with 17:07 remaining in the game.
 
The Cougars had 23 steals in the game (16 in the first half), led by Beth Centlivre and Stephanie Patten with 5 apiece. Meanwhile, Occidental committed 33 turnovers and shot less than 30% (17-for-57) to help the Cougars to the win.
 
Solorio tallied 15 points and a game-high 8 rebounds, while Jennifer Barbone was the fourth Cougar to crack double figures with 12 points. As a team, Azusa Pacific shot 59% (37-for-63) from the field, including a 65% (22-for-34) clip in the first half.
 
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 4-3 and returns to action Saturday evening, taking on Holy Names at 5:30 p.m.
