Cal Poly Left Standing in the End

AZUSA, Calif.-- In a whistle-fest marathon, Cal Poly Pomona prevailed over Azusa Pacific, 108-99, in a nonconference game Tuesday night.

Anna James led 5 Broncos in double-digit scoring with a team- high 26 points, thanks in part to 5 3-pointers, including 4 in the first half.

Azusa Pacific, which at one point led by 12 in the first half, was paced by junior Jacqueline Godoy, who tossed in a career-high 29 points. Junior Stephanie Patten added a career-high 18 as well.

However, this game did not require the full court but rather was played at the free throw line where the 2 teams combined for 96 free throws. In fact, both Cal Poly and Azusa Pacific were an identical 33-for-48 at the line tonight. The 2 squads were whistled for 70 fouls (36 by Azusa Pacific), forcing 6 players to be disqualified before the final horn, including 4 Cougars. ÊÊThus, the game took 2-and-a-half hours to play.

Margot Richards aided Cal Poly's cause with 16 points off the bench, including 10 in the second half.

Though Cal Poly All-American Laurie McIntosh scored the Broncos' first 8 points of the game, she was limited to just 12 points in 13 minutes of play, falling victim to the officials' calls and eventually fouling out.

With the victory, Cal Poly is now 1-0 on the season while Azusa Pacific falls to 1-1.
