LA MIRADA, CALIF. -- The NAIA's No. 20-ranked Azusa Pacific bounced back from a GSAC- opening defeat by knocking off Biola, 84-69, in a GSAC road contest Thursday night.
Freshman
Allison Box and sophomore
Catherine Solorio combined for 48 points to pace the Cougars. Box tallied career-highs 26 points 11 rebounds (she has 21 boards in the past 2 games) while Solorio chipped in her own career-high of 22 points to go along with a game-high 5 assists.
Behind a trio of Box treys, Azusa Pacific jumped out to a 25-10 lead in the first 10 minutes of play. However Biola roared back, using a 13-0 run and 7 points from Shari Andreasen to take a 31-29 lead on a Heather Dowd basket with 5:49 remaining in the half. The 2 teams settled for a 43-43 tie at the half.
After Doud had scored 7 consecutive points for Biola to keep the Eagles within 1 at 55-54, the Cougars finally begin to put the game out of reach, going on a 10-2 run midway through the second half to assume a 65-56 cushion with with 6:40 remaining. Another 9-3 Cougar run put Azusa Pacific out of reach at 74-59 after Solorio scored 5 straight points, which included her career-high fourth 3-pointer.
Biola was paced by Doud's 24 points and 9 rebounds. Andreasen finished with 23 points.
The Cougars have now won 3 straight over Biola and 6 of the past 7 meetings. Azusa Pacific improves to 10-3 on the season, 1-1 in the GSAC. Biola falls to 3-10 overall, 1-1 in the GSAC as well.
