Cougars Slide By Westmont

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific overcame sluggish play with tough second half defense to slide by Westmont, 56-46, in a Golden State Athletic Conference women's basketball game Tuesday night in Azusa.

After Westmont shot 50 percent (14-for-28) in the first half, the Cougar defense stiffened up, forcing 10 second half Warrior turnovers and causing Westmont to shoot just 28 percent (7-for-25) in the second half. Azusa Pacific also pounded Westmont on the boards, out-rebounding the Warriors, 42-26.

Azusa Pacific, who came into tonight's game shooting 70 percent from the charity stripe as a team, was hurt by poor foul shooting, as it shot just 55 percent (12-for-22) from the line in the contest.

Westmont tied the game at 30 on a Janay Lake layup to start the second half of play. The Cougars responded with a 17-8 run over the next 9 minutes to build a 9-point lead with 9:30 remaining in the game. The Warriors rallied with 5 straight points to pull to within 3 at 47-44. Azusa Pacific scored the final 7 points of the game to account for the final 10 point margin.

The Cougars were led by Alison Carr and Amy Lemm who each scored 18 points. Carr scorched the Warriors for a double-double, as she also pulled down 10 boards. For the Warriors, Bernice Stime scored 15 points and had 7 rebounds, while Jaemyne Olson added 14 points.

In a closely contested first half, Azusa Pacific led by only 2, 30-28, at intermission. After the Cougars built a 7 point margin (15-8), the Warriors answered with a 20-15 run over the final 12:30 in the opening frame. Westmont was paced by Stime's 12 points in the opening half.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 16-7 overall, 6-3 in the GSAC, while Westmont falls to 9-14 overall, 0-9 in the GSAC. Azusa Pacific hosts Point Loma Nazarene this Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
