IRVINE, CALIF. -- Top-ranked Azusa Pacific spotted Concordia an early 1-0 lead then roared back with 5 unanswered goals to post a 5-1 victory on the Eagles' home field.
Concordia took a surprising 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when freshmen Heather Hoffman nailed a ball from 30 yards out which carried into the upper far corner.
That lead stood for about 12 minutes until Azusa Pacific struck like lightning. All-American Jennifer Babel knotted the scored at 1-1 in the 25th minute when she converted a penalty kick for her seventh goal of the season (fifth off a penalty kick). Two minutes later senior midfielder Lisa Lawrence gave the Cougars the lead for good when she tapped in a Kendra Payne cross from 5 yards out. Lawrence then gave the Cougars their third goal in a 7-minute span when she tapped in a goal keeper deflection, thus notching the second multiple-goal game of her career.
Freshman Kris Maldanado scored her first collegiate goal in the 56th minute to put Azusa Pacific up 4-1. Payne assisted on that goal as well to give her a GSAC leading 29 points on the season. Babel completed the game with her eighth goal of the season in the 72nd minute.
Azusa Pacific outshot Concordia, 26-3, and committed a season-low 6 fouls.
With the win, Azusa Pacific runs its unbeaten streak to an NAIA-leading 37 in a row. The Cougars are 34-0-3 since the start of the 1998 season and 50-6-3 since head coach Christian Johnson took over the program in 1997.
