AZUSA, CALIF. -- The NAIA's No. 3-ranked Azusa Pacific used first-half goals by NAIA Player of the Year Kendra Payne and All-American Andrea Alfiler along with some outstanding ball control to post a 2-0 GSAC victory over Cal Baptist Saturday afternoon.
The win, which was Azusa Pacific's eighth straight over CBU, clinches no worse than a second place finish in the GSAC.
Payne scored her GSAC-leading 17th goal of the season in the 16th minute after taking a rifle pass over the middle from senior Celeste Mitchell Payne has 7 goals and 3 assists in the past 3 games.
Alfiler added an insurance goal in the 36th minute with a diving header from 7 yards out off a perfectly placed corner kick from Rachel Messick, who had just entered the game.
For the rest of the way, the Cougars kept the ball in the front half of the field, not allowing the Lancers any good opportunities to score. Though Azusa Pacific had just 9 shots, they limited Cal Baptist to just 3 by keeping the ball out of the Lancers' possession.
Since losing to Westmont on Oct. 13, the Cougars have reeled off 3 straight GSAC wins by a combined count of 20-0. Today's shutout is Azusa Pacific's 10th of the season.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 13-1-2 on the season and 5-1 in the GSAC. Cal Baptist falls to 11-4 overall and 4-3 in the GSAC.
