BIRMINGHAM, ALA. -- No. 10-ranked Azusa Pacific (7-1-1) claimed its second win in the Birmingham-Southern College Invitational with a 2-1 victory over No. 23 Berry College (6-4) Saturday night.
For the second straight game, freshman midfielder Matt Evans recorded the Cougars' first goal, this time coming 5:52 into the contest. Evans has recorded either a goal or an assist in 5 straight games for the Cougars, and now has 17 points in 9 games this season.
The Cougars appeared on course for another shutout until Berry's Stephen Gathany tied the contest with a goal at 76:28. However, APU senior Jess Hetherington secured the Cougar win with his second goal of the season, coming at 85:47.
APU returns to action this Wednesday, September 30, when it opens GSAC play against Fresno Pacific University (4-2) at 7 p.m. in Azusa.
