AZUSA, CALIF --Senior All-American Jason Roufs (San Diego, Calif./Mira Mesa HS) registered a hat trick, including 1 goal just 35 seconds into the game, to lead the NAIA's No. 9-ranked Azusa Pacific to a 5-0 nonconference victory over The Master's College in Azusa.
Roufs' first goal of the game, a header off a crossing pass from Carlos Ochoa (Baldwin Park, Calif./Sierra Vista HS), extended his goal scoring streak to a school-record 14 consecutive games dating back to last year.
"It was a good start," said Roufs, "and it was a definite positive for all the new guys. We've got somethings to work on, but the talent is there."
Freshman Matt Evans (Pasadena, Calif./Maranatha HS) tallied a goal in his collegiate debut, cutting across the middle to rifle a shot from 25 yards out to put the Cougars up 4-0 at the time. Senior Will Cummings (Carmichael, Calif./Rio Americano HS) rounded out the scoring with his second collegiate goal. Senior GK Tim Gorman (Bonita, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) registered his ninth career shutout.
The 5-0 win is the largest margin of victory in this series' 14-game history.
With the victory, Azusa Pacific improves to 1-0 while The Master's falls to 2-2.
