LA JOLLA, CALIF -- Senior Jess Hetherington enjoyed his San Diego homecoming by leading the NAIA's No. 12-ranked Azusa Pacific to a 5-1 victory over NCAA Division III power UC San Diego in La Jolla.
Hetherington tallied the game's first goal (his first of the season) less than 7 minutes into the game and then assisted on the Cougars' second scorer, a goal by junior All-American Carlos Ochoa to put the Cougars up 2-0 in the 38th minute.
Like Hetherington, freshman Ryan Fridborg tallied his goal of the season and assisted on Hetherington's. Likewise, Ochoa registered a goal and an assist. Senior Jason Roufs padded his school career goal-scoring record with 2 more scorers to give him 46 in his career. He now has 108 career points, 1 shy of Kojo Asamoah's school-record 109.
The victory is Azusa Pacific's fifth straight over the Tritons and evens the all-time series at 12-12-1.
