AZUSA, CA--Sophomore Rachel Messick scored two goals and assisted on another as Azusa Pacific knocked off Chapman in nonconference action Tuesday evening in Azusa, 4-0. With the victory, the 5th-ranked Cougars improved to 6-0, the best start in program history, along with their highest NAIA ranking ever.
Freshman forward Kimber Carter got things going in the 10th minute when she took a pass from junior Lisa Lawrence and put the Cougars in front 1-0. The action slowed a bit until the 34th minute when sophomore Missy Myers scored her team-high ninth goal of the season off a slick feed from Messick. Six minutes later, it was Messick's turn to net a goal of her own, picking up a loose ball at the 18-yard line and putting the Cougars up 3-0.
Messick finished up the scoring just 35 seconds into the second frame when she took a Carter feed and tallied her second goal of the evening.
Azusa Pacific out-shot Chapman, 12-2, and goalkeeper Rachel Yanos only had to make one harmless save in recording the shutout. The Cougars next play on Sept. 22 at USIU in a 4 p.m. start.
