SCC Celebrated First Ranking with Win

AZUSA, CALIF. -- Southern California college celebrated its first-ever appearance in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll with a hard fought 67-64 victory over Azusa Pacific, Friday night in Azusa. The Vanguards, who are now 7-0 in conference play, were ranked No. 25 and Tuesdays NAIA poll.

SCC used two Alana Kempton three-point buckets to spark a 15-2 run over the first four minutes of the second half to overcome a nine-point halftime deficit to take a two-point advantage, 41–39.

Azusa Pacific stayed tough however, going up by six points, 60-54, with seven minutes remaining on two Kelly Speas' field goals. The Vanguards rallied however, outscoring the Cougars, 13-4, from that point on to hang on for the victory.

Southern California College was led by Kempton who had 17 points, including 14 in the decisive second half, and Elaine Whittlemore, who added 12 points. Azusa Pacific was led by Jessica Herman who tallied 14 points and seven rebounds, while Kelly Speas added 13 points and seven assists. Freshman Danna Wilder grabbed 10 rebounds, her third game in a row with double-figure rebounds.

The Vanguards jumped out to a fast start, running to a 13-2 lead to begin the game. However, Azusa Pacific gained a composure and clawed its way back, going on a 33-13 run over the final 15 minutes of the first half to take a 35-26 halftime advantage.

The Cougars have lost their last three contests by a total of seven points.

With the win, SCC improves to 20-5 overall, 7-0 in the GSAC, while Azusa Pacific falls to 13-10 overall, 2-5 in conference play. The Cougars are back in action Feb. 10 when they meet second-place Concordia at 5:30 p.m.
