AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific made 12 consecutive free throws in the final 4:50 to overcome a 2-point deficit and beat The Master's College, 66-60, in a nonconference women's basketball game in Azusa, Tuesday night.
Though Cougar guard Kelly Speas made just 3-of-16 shots, she buried 8 free throws during the Cougars' late run to spur the Azusa Pacific comeback. She finished with 16 points. Cougar guard Pilar Surch led all players with 18 points, thanks in part to a quartet of treys, including 1 with 5:14 left in the game. It was the Cougars' final field goal of the game. Jessica Herman aided the Cougar cause with 13 points and 8 rebounds.
The Master's, which last led at 53-51 before Surch's final 3-pointer, was paced by Elizabeth Hansell's 16 points and 9 rebounds. The Master's was plagued by poor shooting (.355/22-for-62) and 30 turnovers.
In a miscued-plagued first half that saw the 2 teams combine for 33 turnovers, The Master's fought through its own struggles to take a 4-point lead at the break, 29-25. The Cougars were off to a good start, going on a 12-2 run in the first 4 minutes of the game. However, the Mustangs came back and scored 27 of the game's next 40 points to earn its half-time lead. Two straight treys by Karen Gormley and Kasey Downer with 2:30 left in the half gave The Master's its biggest lead of the half, 27-21. Herman led all first half scorers for the Cougars with 9 points.
With the win Azusa Pacific improves to 15-11 on the year, while The Master's has its 3-game win streak stopped and drops to 8-18.
