Biola Thwarts Cougar Offense

AZUSA, Calif. -- Biola University took advantage of 26 percent (20-for-76) field goal shooting by Azusa Pacific and used an 18-6 run to start the second half to defeat the Cougars, 61-46, Saturday night in Azusa.

The 46 points scored by Azusa Pacific was the lowest point total scored by the Cougars since February 1991, when they scored 40 against Concordia.

The Eagles built up a 26 point lead with 11 minutes remaining, but Azusa Pacific went on a 14-1 spurt over the next 9 minutes to close the deficit to 14. It proved to be too little too late though, as Biola made 2 field goals in the final 30 seconds to come away with the win.

Biola's Yvette Williams led all scorers with 16 points. She also added 14 rebounds. Lalita Hoff added 10 points and 12 boards. For Azusa Pacific, Danna Wilder and Pilar Surch each had 10 points while Wilder pulled down 9 rebounds.

Jessica Herman tallied 2 blocks on the evening to total 66 on the season, breaking the Cougar season record for blocks set in 1997 by Andrea Macciola.

In a sloppy first half that saw a combined 20 turnovers, 11 by the Cougars, Biola went to the locker room with a 32-19 advantage, after jumping out to a 16-6 lead in the first 7 minutes of the game. Azusa Pacific shot just 22 percent (8-for-36) from the field. Biola's biggest lead was 15, after a field goal and free throw by Williams. Williams had 8 points and grabbed 8 boards in the first half alone.

With the win Biola improves to 8-18 on the year, 3-6 in the GSAC, while Azusa Pacific drops to 14-11, 3-6 in conference play.
