AZUSA, Calif. -- Cal Poly Pomona made five free throws in the final 40 seconds to hold off Azusa Pacific, 68-65, in a nonconference women's basketball game Tuesday evening.
The Cougars led at halftime 36-31, and quickly upped their lead to nine points (40-31) with 17 minutes to go. However the Broncos went on a 35-25 run over the rest of the half, including an 8-0 run with 6 minutes left, to rally for the win.
Cal Poly Pomona was led by Lauri McIntosh who had 24 points off the bench. Elizabeth Edmond also chipped in 11 points for the Broncos. Azusa Pacific had 4 players in double figures, led by Amy Lemm with 14 points. Kelly Speas also had 12 points for the Cougars.
Cal Poly Pomona went up 28-20 with 3 minutes remaining in the first half on a Loni Ives field goal, but the Cougars came charging back with a 14-3 run to close out the first 20 minutes of play thanks to 6 Bronco fouls during that stretch. Azusa Pacific sunk 10-of-11 free throws to go into the locker room with a 3 point lead.
With the win, Cal Poly Pomona avenges a 84-74 overtime defeat to Azusa Pacific in last year's Bronco Classic and moves to 3-0 on the season. The Cougars fall to 2-1 overall. Azusa Pacific is next in action Saturday at 8 p.m. when they visit Cal State Stanislaus.
