SANTA BARBARA, CALIF -- Sophomore All-American forward Kendra Payne scored two first-half goals to lead No. 5 Azusa Pacific (12-0, 3-0) to a 2-1 conference victory over No. 4 Westmont (7-2-1, 2-1-1) Saturday in Santa Barbara.
Payne, the 1997 GSAC Player of the Year, started the scoring with a goal in the 14th minute. She netted a rebound ball off of Westmont goalie Kristen St. Clair to put the Cougars up 1-0.
In the 37th minute, Payne converted with a header from junior Lisa Lawrence's corner kick to send the Cougars into the half with a 2-0 lead.
Westmont's Emily Blackerby provided the Warriors' only score with a 23-yard kick in the 48th minute. However, the Cougar defense held strong for the remaining 42 minutes to preserve the win.
With the two goals, Payne moved into a tie for third place among Azusa Pacific's all-time leaders with 74 career points to her name.
The loss was Westmont's first ever in GSAC competition, ending the Warriors' 42-game unbeaten streak since the GSAC adopted women's soccer in 1993. For the Cougars, the win snaps a 7-game skid versus the Warriors in Santa Barbara that dated back to 1994.
The Cougars return to action this Wednesday, October 14, when they host Cal Baptist at 7 p.m.
