Make It 5 In A Row Over Lancers

AZUSA, CALIF. — The back court trio of Pilar Surch, Kelly Speas, and Amy Lemm combined for 38 of Azusa Pacific's 64 points to lead the Cougars to a 64-46 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over California Baptist in Azusa, Tuesday night.

Surch scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the opening half to pace to Cougars, who pushed a 10-point halftime lead into an 18-point (52-34) lead less than nine minutes into the second half.  From there the Cougars cruised in for their third straight victory.

"We did a good job of creating things from our guard play on offense," said Cougar coach Danielle Jorgensen. "Plus the guards did a good job of putting pressure on Cal Baptist at the perimeter. We didn't necessarily take advantage of all of the opportunities though."

Cal Baptist committed 27 turnovers and was held to just 26% (20–of–77) shooting from the floor. The Lancer backcourt of Kristi Swift, Veronica Pattee, and Grace Smart was just 8-of-36 from the floor. Smart was the only Lancer in double figures with 11 points.

Azusa Pacific built in 11-point lead (21–10) 10 minutes into the game, but CBC whittled it to six (28-22) on a layup by Pattee with 2:37 left in the half. However, the cougars continue to run and two Surch three-pointers in the final two minutes gave Azusa Pacific it's 36–26 intermission lead.

The win, which is Azusa Pacific's first straight over Cal Baptist, improves the cougars overall record to 13-7 on the season, 2-2 in the GSAC. Cal Baptist falls to 9–9 overall, 0-4 in the GSAC.
