Cougar Defense Runs By Bethany

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific used a stifling defense to force Bethany College in 33 turnovers and just 23 first-half points en route to a 92-47 nonconference victory Saturday night in Scotts Valley, completing the Cougars' 2-game Bay Area weekend sweep

Azusa Pacific's victory was a team effort with 5 Cougars scoring in double figures. Amy Lemm led the way with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Pilar Surch added 18 points and 8 rebounds, while Alison Carr chipped in 15 points. Kelly Speas dished out a game-high 9 assists. All 10 Cougars got into the game and 9 scores in the contest.

Kim Hernandez led the Bruins with 17 points, and Krisit Netto added 16.

Azusa Pacific started the second half with a 23-13 run in the first 10 minutes to build up a 33-point lead heading into the final quarter of the game.

"We were ready to play," said Lemm. "We were fired up to win both game here in the Bay Area, and we did. Everybody got to play, and it was a total team effort."

The Cougars led early 11-7 and the Bruins never got any closer, with the Cougars scoring 35 of the games' next 51 points to close the first half with a 46-23 lead. Azusa Pacific helped itself with 10-for-13 shooting at the line, a sharp improvement over a 4-for-12 performance the night before at Holy Names.

"We stayed together tonight," said Surch. "We had good attitudes and made the game a lot of fun."
