AZUSA, CALIF. -- Suzanne Knight hit 4 straight shots, including a 3-pointer, to spur a 10-2 run late in the first half and then canned another jumper with 2:51 left in the game to lead Point Loma Nazarene to a 74-66 upset of Azusa Pacific in the first round of the Golden State Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Tuesday night.
With the Crusaders trailing 30-25 with 3:36 let in the first half, Knight caught fire and when she was done Point Loma owned a 35-30 lead with 44 second left before intermission. Azusa Pacific rallied to take a 50-47 lead halfway through the second half. The 2 teams then traded leads, but Knight her only second half jumper to give the Crusaders an insurmountable 65-59 lead.
All-GSAC forward Danielle Phipps tallied a game-high 22 points, including 12 in the second half, and blocked 4 shot to pace PLNU. Amber Cravy and Paige Hall each added 13 points.
Azusa Pacific, which was seeded fourth in the GSAC Tourney, was led by
Christy Brock's 15 points. Guard
Pilar Such collected a game- and career-high 13 rebounds while freshman
Kelly Speas handed out a season-high 11 assists.
With the victory, Point Loma Nazarene advances to the GSAC semi-finals to play regular season champion Fresno Pacific Friday (March 1) at 7:30 p.m. in Fresno. The other semi pits Concordia at Biola, also Friday at 7:30 p.m.
With the win Point Loma Nazarene improves to 11-20 on the season while Azusa Pacific sees its season come to an end at 17-10.
