Winning Streak Pushed to 7

AZUSA, CALIF. — Azusa Pacific pushed its winning streak to seven games and in the process moved to within a half game of the conference lead with a 65-57 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over Concordia, Tuesday night in Azusa.

The Cougars, who haven't lost since Concordia posted an 84-74 win over Azusa Pacific in Irvine back on Jan. 21, used a 10-0 run in the opening minutes of the game to take a 16-5 lead with 15:07 left in the first half. Freshman Christy Brock led the Cougar charge, scoring six of her 10 points during the run.

The Cougars, who led 34-25 at the half, let Concordia get no closer than five points (46-41) with 11 minutes to play in the game. Junior forward Christy Heyer led Azusa Pacific with a career-high 21 points, including 13 in the second half. Heyer also collected a game–high 10 rebounds. Sophomore forward Michelle Kravik paced Concordia with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Concordia, which leads the GSAC in three-pointers with 146, was held to just 1-for-17 (.059) shooting from the three-point arc, and 22-for-72 (.306) shooting overall.

"We know they want to do two things – either shoot a layup or shoot a three-pointer," said Cougar coach Danielle Jorgensen. "We pushed our wings out tonight to try to shut them down on the perimeter. I think we succeeded in doing just that."

The Cougars, who lost 14 of their first 18 games, have turned the tide to win their past seven in a row.

"We're offensively attacking better," added Jorgensen. "When we were in a slump we were back on our heels, holding the ball. I told the ladies that there is a difference between patience and molasses. Before, we played not to lose instead of playing to win. Now they have some confidence and are attacking the opposing defenses."

With the victory, Azusa Pacific improves to 11-14 overall, but more importantly to 7–3 in the GSAC, just a half game behind first-place Fresno Pacific (7-2) with three games to go. Concordia falls out of a second-place tie with the Cougars as it record slips to 16-11 overall, 6–4 in the GSAC.
