AZUSA, CALIF. -- Azusa Pacific used a pair of second-half runs, out-scoring Biola, 32-0, over the two run, to collect a 70-49 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over the Eagles, Saturday night in Azusa.
Down 26-22 with just over 2 minutes left in the first half, the Cougars fashioned a 15-0 run across both halves to assume a 37-26 lead 3 minutes into the second half. Then, leading 42-33, the Cougars ripped off 17 straight points to take an insurmountable 59-33 lead with 8 minutes left in the game.
The Cougar trio of
Christy Brock (16 points, 1 rebound),
Suzy Hassell (14, 10) and
Christy Heyer (12, 16) combined for 42 of the Cougars' 70 points and 27 of the team's 59 rebounds. Brock scored 7 of her game-high 16 points during the Cougars' 15-0 run. Hassell tallied 7 of her 14 points during the 17-0 run.
There were 8 lead changes in the first half, but Biola led by as much as 4 points on two different occasions until the Cougars began their 15-0 run.
Both teams hammered their way through a poor first half, with neither team shooting better than 30% from the floor. However, the Cougars, who made just 9 of their first 37 shots, closed the game by hitting 15 of their final 29 shots. Biola, which was 10-for-38 in the first half, was 9-for-36 in the second half.
The 21-point margin of victory is Azusa Pacific's second largest win over Biola in 39 meetings. The Cougars knocked off Biola, 68-45, in La Mirada in 1989.
Combined with last Tuesday's 77-57 victory at The Master's, the Cougars have now won 2 straight for the first time this season. Azusa Pacific its overall record to 6-14, 2-3 in GSAC play. Biola, who was led by Sonia Schwenk's 12 points and 7 rebounds, falls to 10-13 overall, 1-4 in conference action.
