SCC Collects First-Ever Win In Azusa

AZUSA, CALIF. -- Southern California College built a large lead in the first half and then held on for dear life to post a 61-56 GSAC victory over Azusa Pacific in Azusa, Tuesday night.

The Vanguards used a 16-2 run midway through the first half to take a 28-12 lead with 5:44 left and was up by 18 points (36-18) at halftime.  However, the Cougars rallied behind freshman Christy  Brock's 14 second-half points and cut the SCC lead to 48-46 with 5:14 left in the game.  SCC never relinquished the leed, but the Cougars had the ball and a chance to take the lead with less than a minute to play wih the Vanguards up 54-52.  However, Brock missed a 3-pointer, and SCC made 7 straight free throws in the final 31 seconds to hold on for the victory, its first ever in 15 visits to Azusa.

Senior Heather Brannan led the Vanguards with 18 points, including 10 in the second half.  Heather Woodruff added 14 points to aid SCC.  Brock, who leads the GSAC in scoring with an 18.4 average, tossed in a game-high 22 points to lead Azusa Pacific.

The Vanguards, who made half of their shots in the first half (16-for-32), turned around and made just 7-of-28 (.250) in the second half.  

The Vanguards, who improve to 9-7 overall and 1-0 in the GSAC, run their winning streak to 4 games.  The Cougars fall to 4-13 overall, 1-2 in the GSAC .
