Western Downs Cougars To Win Ninth Straight

BELLINGHAM, WASH. — Forward Shannon Anderson scored 20 points as host Western Washington crushed Azusa Pacific, 83-45, in first day action at the two-day, four-team Hampton Inn/Viking Holiday Classic.

It was the ninth straight win for the 9-2 Vikings. APU, which was led by the 18 points of guard Christy Brock, fell to 2-8.

Center Gina Sampson had 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for Western. Guard Heidi Van Brocklin had 14 points and five assist for the Vikings, hitting five of her six shots from the floor.

Center Susy Hassell had 10 points and eight rebounds for the visiting Cougars, who shot only 33% (15-of-45) from the field.

Western jumped ahead quickly, hitting eight of its first 10 shots to take an 18-2 lead 6 1/2 minutes into the game. Anderson had eight points in the charge.

The Vikings led, 47-22, at halftime, and the lead was never less than 25 points in the second half.

Guard Allison Hall made her one hundredth consecutive start for Western. Hall, who had four points and four assists, has started every game since the opener of the 1991- 92 season.

On Friday, Western meets Emporia State at 7 p.m. with British Columbia playing Azusa Pacific at 5 p.m.
