Hayward's Late Run Does In Cougars

AZUSA, CALIF. -- Cal State Hayward rallied from an 8-point deficit in the final 4 minutes of regulation to force overtime and went on to defeat Azusa Pacific, 60-58, in Azusa Thursday night.

Down 52-44 with 3:44 left in regulation, the Pioneers scored 8 consecutive points and then used Ann Tafolla's 3-pointer with 5 seconds left to knot the score at 54.  Cougar center Suzy Hassell was fouled with a second left in regulation, but she missed front end of a 1-and-1 free throw which allowed for the game to move into overtime.

In the extra frame, Cal State Hayward grabbed its first lead of the game when Tafolla hit a bucket to put the Pioneers up for good at 56-54.  The Cougars had one last chance to send the game into a second overtime, but freshman Christ Brock was stripped of the ball with a second left.  Tafolla led Cal State Hayward with 23 pints, including 8 in the final 6 minutes of the game.

Azusa Pacific, which committed 28 turnovers, including 15 in the second half, was led by Hassell's 13 points.

With the victory, Hayward snaps a 4-game losing streak and improves to 3-5 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 2-6 and sees its losing streak move to 4 straight.
