Jackson Leads Toros Back

CARSON, CALIF. -- Junior forward Trimeka Jackson almost single-handedly carried the Cal State Dominguez Hills past Azusa Pacific Friday night, scoring 14 points and grabbing a career-high 19 rebounds to lead the Toros to a 57-52 win in Carson.

In the early going, however, it looked as if Jackson's efforts would not be enough as Azusa Pacific raced out to a 14-point lead in the first 9 minutes of play.  The Toros began to eat way at that lead in the second half and finally overtook Azusa Pacific at 42-41 on a put-back by Jackson with 10 minutes to play.

The Cougars caught CSDH three times down the stretch, the last time at 52-52 with 1:13 remaining on a pair of Christy Heyer free throws.  But Jackson finished off Azusa Pacific by grabbing the next two rebounds and scoring the next three points.

Dominguez Hills senior guard Karee Bonde matched her season average with 12 points on the strength of three three-pointers.  Sophomore guard Katina Duncans added 10 points and a game-high six assists.

Heyer led Azusa Pacific with 20 points and 11 rebounds.  She was the only Cougar to reach double-figures.

The win puts CSDH (6-5) over .500 for the first time this season.  The Toros head to Northern California for three games in three days, beginning Sunday at Sonoma State.

Azusa Pacific (7-4) returns home to host the University of La Verne tomorrow.
